Takashi Iwai is concerned that drivers are bit-rotting in the staging tree while vendors (and perhaps other developers) continue developing the out-of-tree driver. Greg KH asked for specific examples, saying that he would be happy to drop the in-tree version in such cases. Greg added that a number of drivers are marked to be deleted in 3.11 and 3.12, thanks to the efforts of a summer intern. Takashi but called out crystalhd as having a more up-to-date out-of-tree variants, but that it is not clear which variant is the latest release. He also called out Realtek for keeping up its own drivers, but that there are too many forks to allow him to keep up with all the rtl* and rts* drivers.
